These are NOT generic photos - you're looking at the actual rock you will receive when ordering! And all orders are mailed out within one business day, cost included!

As you can see, this "mini mesa" rock is primarily red / reddish-brown, almost 8" across its base and stands about 6" tall. It offers two relatively flat surfaces (with a slight angle) and a variety of pockmarking types. Also known as "scoria" or "cinder", it was hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona.

When this rock was expelled from one of the volcanoes that were active here between 300,000-1.5 million years ago, hot gases were captured within the molten rock. As it cooled, the gas was trapped, leaving thousands of tiny "pores" within the rock itself. The red color is the result of its high iron content, which oxidized when combined with massive amounts of water vapor expelled during the eruption. You'll notice other smaller rocks embedded along the surface - they were captured into the conglomerate before cooling.

This rock would be perfect for:

• In aquariums. Set it out a bit from a corner to create a safe space for smaller fish, or combine it with other rocks to create an underground scene. Scoria lava rocks are extremely lightweight and reduce the risk of damaging your tanks. They offer additional benefits ensuring the health of your aquarium, too. IMPORTANT: These rocks are shipped in a natural state and need to be prepared before introducing them into your aquarium.

• Lava rocks can create a beautiful setting in your terrarium or bonsai tree arrangements. Juxtapose this rock to larger plants to create a visual offset, for example. (Please see our other listings if you’re looking for something in a different size or shape. Each listing is unique.)

• Lava rocks are an ideal base for planting small succulents. Its pores offer natural benefits that help certain varieties of succulents to even thrive compared to other planting methods. They allow air to pass to their shallow roots, while retaining moisture as water easily drains. Their native roughness offers a place for plants to grab hold and take root, too.

We don't take you for granite at Arizona Lava Rocks! Our listings don't start out in a pile in some yard! Each rock is individually gathered. This one was picked off the ground because something about it caught our eye. Again, this listing is for the specific rock you see in the accompanying photos. Our inventory is constantly changing - please check out our other listings.
