$2 Silver Certificate, Series of 1896. The obverse depicts the allegory “Science presenting steam and electricity to Commerce and Manufacture;” engraved by G.F.C. Smillie. Engraved signatures of Tillman (Register of the Treasury) and Morgan (Treasurer of the United States). The Series of 1896 United States Silver Certificates (issued in $1, $2, and $5 denominations) marked a significant departure from any previous design of U.S. paper currency. All three denominations depict neoclassical allegorical vignettes. The 1896 Silver certificates are often referred to as the Educational Series .
