Item Description: I am pleased to offer this original and old hand-made Japanese sword, or Nihonto, brought back from WWII. The sword is a Late Koto or Early Shinto wakizashi made by the well-known swordsmith Kaifu Ujiyoshi. The blade and the mountings are in Near MINT condition. The sword has a blade length of 18 inches (46cm). It features a very rare shape with one side showing a shobu-zukuri construction, with strong shinogi ridgeline without a yokote defining the kissaki, and the other side showing a flat ridgeless hira-zukuri construction. The hada is a highly visible itame hada that mixes with both ko-mokume small burl patterns and a straighter masame hada along the edge. The hamon is a thick Soshu-style chu-notare that is present the length of the blade ending in a maru boshi. There is prevalent chikei and activities like inazuma and kinsuji in and along the hamon.

The blade itself is externally signed along the shinogi-ji Ashu Kaifu ju Ujiyoshi Saku and the tang is mumei unsigned and ubu unshortened. Ujiyoshi was a line of swordsmiths from the well-known Kaifu school of Awa province. The school was active from the Sengoku period early 1500’s through the late 1800’s. Their location was on an island and they were famous for supplying Japanese pirates with swords. This generation of Ujiyoshi looked to be active in the late 1500’s or early 1600’s.

The blade comes in shirasaya mountings. They are in Near MINT condition. The blade is in Near MINT condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and very few scratches. There are some scattered lateral wares and areas of coarse grain. There are no major flaws like hagire.

Given the high degree of craftsmanship displayed, the history, and the condition, I highly recommend this sword to a collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.
