History Siert Ingo 06/02/2012 HAWKSDALE left Hamburg on January 22nd 1899 for Melbourne with a cargo of general goods (i.a. 500 pianos). She got a German pilot (Schmidt) on board from Hamburg to assist the captain until they reach Dungeness. She ran aground near North Foreland. High seas broke over the ship. A rescue boat was lowered but capsized soon afterwards. The pilot and two able seaman were drowned during this attempt. About 11:30 am the Clacton and Margate life-boats reached the vessel and rescued the remaining crew. The master lost his certificate in the aftermath. Miller Jon 26/10/2019 Brightlingsea, 1 February 1899: The Emily has landed here a quantity of chairs, paper, wire, and five pianos, ex HAWKSDALE (1899), on Longsand. London, 3 February 1899: The Salvage Association reports that the weather yesterday entirely prevented the salvage steamer Helios approaching this vessel, and nothing could therefore be done with regard to an examination of further salvage of cargo. Considerable quantities of cargo and stores have already been salved, and are being warehoused at Margate, Ramsgate, and Whitstable. Deal, 5 February 1899, 5.7 pm: Lugger Friends of all Nations just returned from Heap Sands, reports ship broken in halves at main hatch and now under water. London, 7 February 1899: Ramsgate, 7 February 1899: Ship broken in two; mainmast gone below main yard; mizenmast adrift, will also likely fall over stern low water. Could not get nearer than about a mile. One Margate boat was alongside salving cargo. London, 27 February 1899: Lloyd's Agent, Ramsgate, 25 February 1899: Three boats arrived at Margate this morning with a quantity of glass, china, and enamel ware from the HAWKSDALE.
