ITEM DESCRIPTION
Description
Up for your consideration an antique 18th C. English caneware rabbit game pie dish, topped with a hen and several chicks. It was made, c. 1780, and bears an incised mark of "C.S" and "8" underneath the lid. Later examples (c. 1830) using this round basket form were incised "William Schiller," but this is an earlier example. I do not know the maker. Wedgwood made similar pieces, but in my opinion, this is more attractive than those pieces because the central figure is substantially larger and more detailed. This piece measures 7.5" in diameter and 7" tall. The hen is solid pottery, so it is heavy.
Excellent original condition, some light surface wear/imperfections to the extreme edges on the bottom piece. Nothing distracting, showing little or no use. The top piece is free of chips, cracks, or losses, and it retains its original green, black, and red paint. It is free of discoloration. The piece presents exceptionally well.
