The trident is an ancient Ukrainian symbol. Its oldest image, found by archaeologists, dates back to the 10th century. Images of the trident were found on contemporary coins (silver coins and gold coins), seals, dishes, tombstones, bricks, deed seals, signet rings, hryvnia ingots, weapons, equipment, merchandise seals. It is assumed that it was a magical birthmark, a talisman. Up to 40 of its interpretations are known: a trident, a trikyria candlestick, a falcon, an anchor, an ear of rye, a bow with an arrow, a triune sacrifice in the name of the victory of life over death... There is also a hypothesis that this is a sign of the trinity of the world. This symbol of ownership and power was passed down from generation to generation, changing so that each representative of the family had an individual emblem (for example, the predecessors of King Volodymyr Svyatoslavich of Kyiv had bidents). The pommel in the form of a princely sign was the main element of the Old Ukrainians flags. There are especially many artifacts from the reign of Volodymyr Svyatoslavovych (on the throne of Kyiv from about 980). That is why the Trident is considered the sign of Prince Volodymyr the Great.
