This antique pair of pince-nez glasses has a silver-toned wire rim around the glass, with a gold bridge (due to the inability to make out all the lettering details, I couldn't tell if it was G.F., 12K or 14K gold, so my apologies on that). The words "DEFIANCE II" are marked on the interior of the bridge arch, and there is also a PAT date listed on it, but no amount of magnification would allow me to make out the YEAR, so all I could make out was June 20...  The pads on the nose piece are in nice condition, too. There are a few scratches on the lenses, but considering the age, they are minimal (I personally have glasses that are in way worse condition, lol). The case is marked C. Sieglitz, Jeweler & Optician, Vevay, Ind., which when I did some research on this, it appears that this family had been doing Optical work for what appears to be 4 generations, until approximately 2021 when the business was sold. So, it is a remarkable find, indeed. The case is in good shape, opens and closes nicely, however, the exterior is definitely flaking a lot, and care needs to be taken to prevent further deterioration to the case. Pince-nez glasses were popular in the late 19th century, up through the very early 20th century, when their popularity waned, with newer innovations in optical wear replaced them. So, the exact date of these glasses is difficult to pinpoint. We couldn't find anything regarding the Defiance II patent either. So, best guess is these probably were in the late 1800's, or very early 1900's. If you have any further information, please feel free to share with me, thanks. These were purchased at an estate sale, so I don't have additional provenance on them, other than they made there way to S.C.
