A LARGE 7 7/8 inch tall deep COBALT blue square antique HARTZ POISON bottle. This is the large PINT SIZED bottle. This is a CANADIAN bottle. It is embossed on three sides with small HEART SHAPED warning protrusions. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, dating ca. late 1800 - early 1900.

Bottle embossed: "CONTENTS / 16 FL. OZ. / THE / J.F. HARTZ CO. / LIMITED / TORONTO" (inside a LARGE embossed heart). Then under this and on two other sides the entire bottle is embossed with tiny heart patterns, segmented by a dot, as warning protrusions to let a user know that by sight and touch, the contents were poisonous.
Condition: Bottle is in very good condition. It has two tiny impact marks (seen though not felt) and a small chip of glass missing, on the side panels. Otherwise bottle is in very good condition. PLEASE see pictures for idea of overall appearance.
Age: An ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand-blown bottle (Blown-In-Mold = BIM) with a tooled-top, ca. late 1800 - early 1900.

A rarely offered bottle especially in this larger size. This bottle is cataloged as number KS-15 in the Poison Bottle Book, the recognized reference book on antique poison bottles. In this book, the author Rudy Kuhn states that this bottle is VERY RARE. It is quite possibly the largest size that these bottles come in, being just short of 8 inches tall. Antique poison bottles are quite collectible as they were mostly made in odd shapes or forms, unusual colors, and had fancy or extraordinary embossing patterns on them. For example, much of this bottle is covered with tiny embossed hearts, actually most of the bottle's surface is embossed like this. These not only were a subtle reference to the name of the company that bottled this product but more importantly, they acted as warning protrusions to let the user know by sight and touch, that the contents of the bottle was toxic. Though originally these were all things to let a user know, by sight and feel, that the bottle's contents were something not to be consumed, today these are all the things that makes poison bottles such a desirable category of antique bottle collecting! This one with the elaborate embossing patterns, the LARGE PINT SIZE, and in the deep COBALT BLUE color make it a great example of all of these things, check it out!
