Copy of the original edition which was bought from Hachette by Dentu, Hachette renouncing publication for fear of scandal. This first edition published under the name of Hachette would only exist in a few copies (BN, reserve), a past at my colleague Benoit Galland bookstore three feathers. Just before the sale, the director of the Maison Hachette, frightened by a passage from the Preface, had the covers of all the copies ready for delivery, as well as the titles bearing the name of Hachette, crushed. Dentu bought back the edition in sheets, had boxes composed for the incriminated passages and put the book on sale under his name. The work was seized in France and immediately placed on the Index by Rome (decree of January 26, 1863).
