A superb and rare photo of Syd Barnett on the magnificent 500cc Triumph Grand Prix.

The Triumph Grand Prix has an interesting history. In 1946 the 500cc Senior Manx Grand Prix was won by Ernie Lyons on a nicely tuned Triumph Tiger 100 twin that carried a cylinderhead and barrel of a WWII Royal Air Force generator. Shortly after Ernie’s victory there were a lot of racers that contacted Triumph with the question whether it was possible to produce a similar, but then factory build, machine. Edward Turner could not do any different then notice this, and ultimately he started a small road-race development program, with works support for Dave Whitworth during a number of continental meetings in 1947. He won quite a few races. Its success evolved in the new Triumph Grand Prix production racer that was introduced in 1948. Each Grand Prix was sold with a certificate giving general data and the horsepower figure for that particular engine. Initially 50 were constructed. All of them used the ex-generator barrels and heads. As could be expected, the characteristic engine bore a lot of resemblances with Turner's original 1938 Speed Twin design. The G.P. had a bore and stroke of 63 x 80 mm, enough for a capacity of 498cc. The chassis was a brazed-lug and welded tubular cradle, and it carried Triumphs sprung rear hub. Wheelbase was 55" and the dry weight was 314 lbs (142.43 kgs). The power output was with 40 hp at 7,200 r.p.m. not bad and, according to Triumph, good enough for a top speed of 120 mph (193 kmph). Immediately there was a lot of interest for the new Triumph G.P. They quickly sold out. Riders like Reg Armstrong, Syd Barnett, Ken Bills, Bob Foster, Freddie Frith, Albert Moule, Arthur Wheeler and Vic Willoughby all bought one.
