DESCRIPTION

The illuminated manuscripts of Jean Froissart's Chronicles, illuminated by experienced limner Henry Noel Humphrey. With thirty six plates to both volumes, collated and complete.

Gutta percha binding fragile as usual.

Medieval author and court historian Jean Froissart is known for his long Arthurian romance, an extensive body of poetry, and the Chronicles, which are recognised as the chief expression of the chivalric revival in 14th century England, France and Scotland.

The text of Froissart's Chronicles has been preserved in more than 100 illuminated manuscripts illustrate by a variety of miniaturists. In this volume, British illustrator and naturalist illuminates the miniatures depicting a range of scenes including tournaments, wars and domestic life.

Blind stamp from Neatham Mill Library to rear endpapers of both volumes.

Prior author's ink inscription to front pastedown. 'William John Evelyn, Oxford, 1844'.
Evelyn was a British Member of Parliament, who was MP for Surrey West in 1849 and for Deptford in 1885.
