On December 14, 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued Executive Order 10980, establishing the President's Commission on the Status of Women.  Its goal was to suggest solutions to the problems that prevented women from achieving equality in the workplace and in general society. The idea grew out of Kennedy's association with former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the most prominent civil rights and women's rights activists. Kennedy appointed Roosevelt as the commission's chairman; she served until her death in late 1962.
