DESCRIPTION

A signed presentation copy, with the inscription 'to Barbara with the very best wishes of the illustrator, Winifred Hartley', dated June 4th 1913.

Along with F. Carruthers Gould - a British cartoonist known for his contributions to Punch - Hartley illustrated this charming volume, which features an illustrated title page and numerous vignette illustrations throughout.

The first edition of this very scarce work from Victorian era poet Annie Matheson. Alongside children's works and lyrical poetry, Matheson was known to have written one of the first biographies of Florence Nightingale.

With two pages of advertisements to the rear.

With the bookplate of Anne Renier and F. G. Renier to the front pastedown. Anne and her husband Ferdinand were collectors of children's books, and together donated over 80,000 items - including books, toys, games and printed ephemera - to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1970.

An excellent copy of this very scarce work, signed by an illustrator.
