Studio-Line, Flash One Collection

Dorothy Hafner trained as a painter and sculptor and first tried her hand at ceramics, both functional and sculptural, in 1973. Through Rosenthal Studio Line, Hafner is first American woman invited to design for this prestigious German porcelain and glass firm.

The "Flash" dinnerware set for Rosenthal, created in 1982 quickly became an instant icon of its era and is chronicled in many books on the history of ceramics as well as the design arts. In perfect condition no chips, scratches, nicks, fading or cracks.

In the eighties, Rosenthal introduced for the first time services that were made not of porcelain but of ceramic and that did not belong to the traditional style trends but to the post-modern. FLASH's wealth of color expressed the joy of beautiful moments. In terms of form, though, these post-modern ceramics are related to Art Deco.

These ceramic pieces were not created in the newest style of art, but rather exploited tendencies of modern art commercially. No design speaks to us with a more contemporary voice than does FLASH. With vivid shades of pink, purple, blue, red and yellow captured within a bold geometric pattern and set on dynamic shapes, Flash is eye-catching and dramatic. Those who have long recognized Hafner's work best realize that her pieces can be used individually as objects d'art or as an extravagant gift item.
