Volume One covers most of the events of the late seventies and the early 1980s, but features flashbacks to earlier roots. The Dead series has always been in print in some form and both Volume 1 and 2 have been translated into several languages. In spite of this popularity, starting decades ago, they are rare, hard to locate items and well worth the price. 

The Dead Book series stands the test of time and remains very controversial. Harrison's hard ass view of the world has landed him in trouble many times, but his words, written twenty and even thirty years ago, still ring true.

This visionary series has been banned and cold shouldered. Many authors are envious of its success and the Grateful Dead public relations staff has attempted to marginalize the authors’ contribution. They do not want the public to know that this series, including translations and mass market editions, has out sold all other Grateful Dead books combined...a remarkable achievement considering it has been black listed by distributors who feed on the sycophantic and retro Grateful Dead market.
