NEWFOUNDLAND 139 SG157 1923 10c VIOLET HUMBER RIVER CANON CP14.0x14.0 VF USED

View of the Humber River Canyon (CANON is not a error of the printing company - it was included in the original notes from the photographer R.E. Holloway), 10 cent value from the very popular Pictorial Issue of 1923 that features some of the finest stamp engraving ever produced. Violet, perf 14.0x14.0 (at least 9 perf varieties have been recorded to date for the Pictorial Issue, 6 have been found in the 10 cent value). Used with non distinct cancel. Sound, fault-free example of this Newfoundland stamp.

From the magnificent book "Newfoundland Postage Stamp Designs" by Cliff Brown - Except for the 1c and 20c stamps, all images in the 1923-24 Pictorial Issue were based on photographs taken by Robert Holloway, a well known St. John's educator and photographer. The designer of the series was Archibald Gibbs, a St. John's businessman, with the actual engravings done by Leonard V. Philips.

Listed as 157 in the 2020 edition of the Stanley Gibbons catalogue with a retail selling price in used condition of 11pds - approximately $14.00 USD.
