1966 Press Photo New York City's Lincoln Center Grand Promenade Eagle-Eye View
This is an original press photo. Top and side views of the elegant spiral staircase which winds up through the opera foyer creating free-form patterns of concrete. The hundreds of stairs are covered in an elegant opera red--one of the two shades chosen by architect Wallace Harrison and approved by Marc Chagall, painter of the Metropolitan Opera murals--to blend with the fine decor. The stairways are trimmed in white and have beaten bronze banisters. The carpet was specially woven for the Metropolitan Opera by Mohawk, and each stair was cut by separate templet to avoid seams. At intermission time, hundreds of women in their finery will make the traditional promenade down this magnificent stairway. Lincoln Center, New York City.Photo measures 10 x 6.5inches. Photo is dated 09-27-1966.
