Free Appreciation Society

Magazine Issue #168

July 2023 Issue

So, #168 is the second of five issues dealing with the reformation of the group in 1972, after they'd split in May 1971. Here we have the conclusion of the February 1972 UK tour, another grasp at the 'Sail On' super-group session, this time with information provided by Corky Laing, from Mountain, and Free head into the studio for the formative work on 'Free At Last' to begin. This issue has a large amount of information on the tapes from those sessions, in an almost day-to-day-format. Lots of great articles, and reviews from the period. Fabulous photographs, including a centre-page poster reproduction of Paul Rodgers that was in 'Disc' magazine (from the Royal Albert Hall show February 10th, 1972), along with a few others from that show that were excluded (due to space restrictions and re-setting) in #167.

We also follow the group on a short series of shows in Finland and Sweden during March. These shows break up the 'FAL' recordings. At this point I'm VERY pleased to have some brand new photographs never used in the FAS before, from the original Finnish photographer. These really are great new shots. That includes one of Andy on the back page where the bass looks ridiculously large on him! The magazine closes with an A&M Records press release, as over in the USA they prepare for a long tour by the group, and the new album.

52 pages, many in colour, with original press articles from the period, posters, tickets, and studio recording reel labels from the actual tape boxes. Lots of new information, and many things never used in the FAS before.
