Vintage Ancient Cross, Clonmacnoise, Ireland Print, Matted and Framed.

Ancient Cross Clonmacnoise Ireland Drawn By W H Bartlett Engraved By H Griffiths from “The Scenery and Antiquities of Ireland”.

Drawings By WHBartlett Published London.

The monastery of Clonmacnoise is situated in County Offaly, Ireland on the River Shannon south of Athlone. The site stands as a preserved ruin under the management of the Office of Public Works. The graveyard surrounding the site continues to be in use and religious services are held regularly on the site in a modern chapel.

The cross was carved from Clare sandstone c.900. The surface of the cross is divided into panels, showing scenes including the Crucifixion, the Last Judgement, and Christ in the Tomb.

This lovely engraved image is double matted and in good condition. The frame has wear at the corners.

Measures 13” x 11”. Professional framed.

The original etching was produced in the 19th century, I don’t know the origins of this piece. It was an estate sale discovery.
