Offered here is a vintage Mitchell friction pan / tilt head marked model I-U. The head is complete with an original Mitchell hi hat marked model I-Y. Mitchell Camera Corporation was a motion picture camera manufacturing company established in Los Angeles in 1919. It was a primary supplier of newsreel and movie cameras for decades, until its closure in 1979. Mitchell Friction Pan/Tilt Head - By August of 1920, George Mitchell had invented the Friction Head, and filed for patent by 1921. Taking time to perfect it, the well known Friction Pan/Tilt Head was introduced in 1928. The Friction Head very quickly became the standard professional motion picture camera pan/tilt tripod head, replacing earlier hand-cranked types. We believe that this individual head and hi hat date to the early 1950s. Both the head and hi hat are complete and in proper working order. The combination weighs almost 14 pounds. The camera mounting platform measures 7.25" X 5.75". The head was designed to support the massive Mitchell 35mm cameras and is capable of supporting most anything in use in the professional world today. The head and hi hat can be used together or separately with each piece having the standard Mitchell mount still in widespread use today. The head is complete and clean with all locks, knobs, and levers working, however if you plan to put the head into professional daily use, you should probably have it professionally serviced and lubricated because we have no idea when that was last done. These vintage items have become very hard to find. Why not add the original and perhaps still the best to your kit today.
