Up for sale is a 2001 Epiphone Les Paul Standard with a high gloss Cherry finish and a Gibson-style open headstock, complete with a hardshell case. Made in Japan at the Fujigen factory, this Epiphone is the result of years of collaboration between Gibson USA and its Japanese distributor Yamano-Gakki.
Made exclusively for the domestic Japanese market, this rare Epiphone iteration of the classic Les Paul Standard platform features a solid maple top, mahogany body and neck with long tenon joint, and a rosewood fretboard. Tonally, the PAF humbuckers provide a high level of detail and clarity, as well as the pleasant, melodious stability that is characteristic of Les Paul construction. The guitar is light weight - 8 pounds 5 inches, has a clear acoustic voice with good natural sound accompaniment. Professionally tuned at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this Epiphone guitar features 10-46 strings and is tuned for low tuning and precise intonation.
The mahogany neck has a medium C-shaped profile bordering on slender, moderate shoulder and easy to play. Its depth is .830" at the 1st fret and .940" at the 12th. Rosewood neck with mother-of-pearl block inlays and original medium jumbo fret wire. The frets are well fleshed, showing moderate, even wear under all strings at fret crowns 1-7, lighter wear under the plain strings up to fret 9, and virtually no wear further down the frets. The guitar plays cleanly in every register, the neck is straight, with a responsive and optimally adjusted peg.
The guitar is built to traditional Gibson standards with a 24 3/4" scale length and a 1 11/16" neck width. The headplate features the characteristic Gibson "open book" shape found only on Japanese-made Epiphone instruments. In addition, there is the original Gibson head cover, as well as a set of Kluson tuners with slightly green keystone buttons. There are very faint halos on the neck end of the larger pucks for another set of tuners.
The electronics work as expected, with the original humbuckers and solder joints intact, and a long neck bar is visible in the neck pickup cavity. The hardware includes the original nickel-plated ABR-1 bridge and stoptail, on which only a touch of patina is noticeable, and plastic - cream pickup rings and a quartet of gold speed knobs. Cosmetic wear includes a few small chipped finishes near the strap studs and on the top edge of the neck, as well as a few scattered small nicks and light scratches on the overall finish of the body. The neck profile has a smooth, glossy finish, with one dent on the bass side of the carving beyond the 7th fret.
