Vintage Austin Studios DeGroot Sculpture of a Woman Playing A Flute -

Dimensions are ; 15 7/8" high , 10 1/4" wide at the knees , 5 1/4" deep , with a base measurement of 7" X 6 3/4" . Material is grey colored ceramic . The Sculptor is Theodore DeGroot ( 1920 - 2019 ). The subject of this 1961 Austin Studios Productions piece is a woman , hair pulled up and seated cross-legged on a large pillow which functions as the base . She is playing a wind instrument referred to as a 'flute' although with a visible bell it more resembles a clarinet . The 62 year old sculpture is in remarkable condition and the grey color has developed a warm and rich patina over the decades . This is quintessential DeGroot , a Dutch painter/sculptor who emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Pennsylvania ( we have another DeGroot we offer here on eBay ) , whose style is described as 'brutalist' but is somewhat more fluid in its appearance and effect and falls much more into the category of mid-century modern . This very work can command a much higher price than we have listed here , often fetching more than $1000 at auction , particularly in Europe . 'Woman Playing A Flute' is a great piece in any setting you choose .
