Listed items will not be marked down during the listing duration. Grosvenor was introduced in 1921, and remained a mainstay of the Oneida Company's Community Brand of silver for over 30 years. It still could be special ordered in the early 1950s. The pattern features a neoclassical frieze, with a rectangular cartouche surmounted with an acanthus, and a ribbon of beads and a lamp beneath. Under the rectangle is a bell shaped support. The whole design resembles a Regency mirror with decorations found in London houses of the period on Grosvenor Square. The design is by Grosvenor Allen, President of the Oneida Company, who liked it so much he named the pattern after himself. Grosvenor is pronounced GROVE-eh-nor. Sets of this that have been in daily use for almost 100 years rarely show any signs of wear. It is one of the best made of all plated patterns. There comes a point where the baby needs to learn to feed herself, usually when she has enough teeth to bite the feeder. For learning to feed oneself, there is the bent handled baby spoon, the one in which the handle doubles back on itself, producing a looped handle. This sort of handle is easier for a little hand to grasp. It is rather difficult not to get some kind of hold on it. The bent over handle has no sharp edges or end to poke or injure little babies. It is large enough that it cannot be swallowed, and it is fairly easy to drag out of the baby's mouth. There is a superstition that tooth marks are a good sign on these spoons, as they indicate that the baby was alive and healthy. The bent handle baby spoon offered here measures about 3 1/2. This is not a piece of new silver. It shows the patina of as much as 95 years of use by babies. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss except for a tiny bit on the rim of the bowl and rest dots on the rest points of the back of the handle, all the result of age and reasonable use by children. The pattern is crisp and clear. I polish all silver before listing on eBay. Please email with any questions before bidding. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE AUCTION DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY. BY BIDDING YOU AGREE TO ABIDE BY MY TERMS OF SALE including the cost and method of shipping and my return policy. I welcome international bidders, but remember that shipping charges can be high. Ask before you bid. Winning bidder to pay shipping charges unless otherwise specified. I ship by United States Postal Service only. I ship all silverware via USPS Priority Mail in boxes. I NEVER ship silverware in envelopes. I insure ALL shipping, as I sell old and scarce items that cannot be easily replaced. Domestic shipping charge for 1 pound or under is now $8.10, which is Priority Mail. International shipping charges vary widely, and I now must use only International Priority shipping, in order to be able to insure the package, purchase a tracking number and proof of delivery, all of which protect both buyer and seller. I now print shipping labels online to keep shipping costs down as much as possible, so I can ship only to the buyers confirmed address. I regret that I can no longer ship gifts directly to the recipient. Payment in US funds only, and I accept only Paypal. I must receive payment in full within 7 days after the end of auction or a store purchase . Due to misuse of a former return policy, I will no longer accept returns.
