NEWFOUNDLAND 159 30c GRAND FALLS 1928 1ST LABRADOR PUBLICITY ISSUE MPH CV$25

Thirty cent 'Grand Falls', olive brown from the 1928 'Publicity' issue, engraved, no watermark.  Printed on medium weight, white wove paper with horizontal mesh, whitish (almost colorless) gum.  Original gum disturbed by previous hinging. Sound, fault-free example of this Newfoundland stamp.

Stamp shown is a good representative of those that are available. If the stamp received fails to meet expectations, it may be returned for a replacement or full refund.

In 1927, the British Privy Council, over Canada's objection on behalf of Quebec, confirmed the Dominion of Newfoundland's historical claim to Labrador. Newfoundland used the reward to publicize it's significantly enlarged landmass through a new series of stamps that hopefully would encourage additional tourism and economic development. The first of 3 series of stamps known as the "Publicity" or "Pictorial" (sometimes "Newfoundland-Labrador" or "Labrador Publicity") issues were printed in 1928 by De La Rue and Company of London. Soon after this printing, De La Rue lost it's contract to John Dickson and Company but refused to turn over the engraving plates to the new contractor. John Dickson then asked Perkins, Bacon and Company to produce "re-engraved" plates of most of the 1928 images which were subsequently used to print the 2nd Publicity stamp series in 1929-1931 and the 3rd Publicity issue in July of 1931. Paper watermarked with the Newfoundland 'Coat of Arms' was used for the first time in the printing of the 3rd Publicity issue.

Grand Falls are in the interior of Labrador on the Hamilton River. This watercourse, after proceeding through a level interior, falls some 900 feet in ten miles to the head of its canyon. In this drop comes the Grand Falls, a sheer descent of 315 feet which, when taken in conjunction with the volume of the water which once flowed over its brink, made it at one time the greatest waterfall in North America, even exceeding mighty Niagara Falls. With the diversion of the river for hydro-electric power, sadly today's Churchill Falls is a mere "trickle".

From Cliff Brown's magnificent book "Newfoundland Postage Stamp Designs": "The 30c Grand Falls stamp is based on an aerial photograph taken in 1925 by Yale University student Varick Frissel. He also shot the first movie footage ever of the falls and used it in a film "The Lure of Labrador" released in 1926. He was killed in an onboard ship explosion in 1931 near the Horse Islands (north of Baie Verte peninsula) while trying to get additional footage for "The Viking" another film he made."

Initially "the falls was known as Hamilton Falls. In 1965 it was renamed Churchill Falls" in honor of the renowned statesman Sir Winston Churchill who died in July of that year.

"In 1967 construction began here on a hydro-electric project. By 1975 it had become one of the world's largest hydro-electric developments."

Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot. However, if it doesn't live up to your expectations you are always welcome to return it for a full refund - NO QUESTIONS ASKED. My feedback speaks for itself. I am confident that a mutually satisfactory solution can be worked out to any problem that might develop. Please give me a chance to fix something that is not satisfactory to you before leaving negative feedback.

Although 3 and 4 star DSR scores may be considered "good" by just about any reasonable standard, they aren't as far as ebay is concerned. Anything but 5 ratings in a seller's DSR score may impact their ability to offer items for sale on ebay. Therefore, having an opportunity to earn your highest rating would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your consideration.
