A unique, unusual, Large   Asafo Flag from the Fante people of Ghana , featuring the British Flag.

These flags are visual representations of military organisations in the Fante Communities known as "Asafo".

 

Asafo= ? War People?

 

The Asafo or "companies" each have their own flag name and number.

 

Every flag has a message /story to tell from the images displayed on the flag.

The message this flag represents; " Like the aeroplane , we can go anywhere"

The British flag was used until 1957, since then the flag of Ghana is often substituted. The reverse side is 

appliquéd with the same image, usually matching very closely, less so with letterings. 

 

 The Flags were used during the installation of a new Asafo Captain , during festivals , funerals of a 

company's member and during other traditional events.

 

The imagery on the flags asserts the wealth and power of the company and explicitly challenges rival 

groups. Often the design alludes to proverbs, reflecting the importance of proverbs throughout Akan 

culture.

This is a nice , quality flag , in a good vintage condition, unlike many other Asafo flags on eBay, this flag is most 

finely hand stiched. 

A quality rare flag; each animal is finely hand stitched onto the flag (please see images).

This flag is in a good vintage condition with some wear due to usuage, small holes, minor repairs and minor stains.

Great as a wall hanging and highly collectable.
