"Gary Lucas Album

The Killer Shrews are a strange group, which the name would suggest. With members of The Mekons, Pere Ubu, and the guy from either Captain Beefheart or Jeff Buckley, depending on one’s point of view, there is no other way. One might expect the sole album by this “supergroup,” if one can call it that, to be a sort of avant-noise experiment, appealing to the pretentious punk crowd, but it is more than that. Bluntly, the most important member keeping the group from its potential worst impulses is Gary Lucas, who is among the greatest guitar virtuosos. Fans of either The Mekons or Pere Ubu will surely have reasons to come to The Killer Shrews, but unless one is dedicated to their particular forms, there are excesses, which tend to favor noise over melody, and even Lucas experiments with noise, given his association with Captain Beefheart, but as a virtuoso of the highest order, he centers his music on melody.

The Killer Shrews, then, is aesthetically a punk album, but without the sloppiness, and with wild guitar solos. The sneering vocals, the science fiction and horror references, which go back to Edgar Allen Poe, all of these elements speak to the art school punk, as opposed to the garage band punk approach. Yet while Lucas is the virtuoso here, neither Langford nor Maimone are willing to abandon such core elements as keeping proper time. They are just constructing songs that are intended to appeal to the art school punk, and then Gary plays some mind-boggling guitar solo.“
