WITH INSCRIPTION ON FREE-ENDS BY A TALMID OF THE AUTHOR, R. YOSEF WEISS, FROM 1944, WHO WRITES THAT HE PURCHASED THE BOOK ON THE YAHRTZEIT OF THE AUTHOR IN 1944
דברי אגדה והלכה, וכן דברי תורה על שבתות ומועדים, "אשר השאיר אחריו ברכה כ"ק אדמו"ר נר ישראל, מרן רבי יעקב חזקיה גרינוולד". בעריכת בנו, רבי יוסף גרינוולד. בספר נדפסו גם חידושי משניות מסכתות יומא וסוכה מכתב יד קודשו של בעל "ערוגות הבושם", רבי משה גרינוולד, אביו של המחבר. וכן נלווה אליו קונטרס "צדה לדרך" - צוואת רבנו המחבר, עם ליקוטי מוסר שנמצאו בכתבי קודשו. כל פרקי הספר מלאים ומושפעים מדברי מורנו הבעש"ט וגדולי החסידות.
בפתח הספר הקדמה ארוכה (16 עמ') מאת בן המחבר, המספר מתולדותיו ושבחיו של אביו, ומביא סיפורים מופלאים על אודותיו. לאחר מכן מובא "העתק מכתב שכתב רבנו הק' זי"ע תלמיד חביב לשדה המלחמה בשנת תרע"ה", ובו דברי חיזוק וניחומים, וכן "העתק מכתב שכתב רבנו זי"ע בער"ה דשנת תש"א לחתנו ולתלמידיו שהיו במחנה עבודת הצבא בימי הנוראים".
הגאון הקדוש רבי יעקב חזקיה גרינוולד (תרמ"ב-תש"א), אב"ד צעהלים ופאפא, בנו ותלמידו המובהק של הגאון רבי משה גרינוולד בעל "ערוגות הבושם" אב"ד חוסט. בשנת תר"ס (1900) נישא לבת דודו רבי ישראל מנחם ברוין, שהיה אב"ד ברזוביץ.
הסתופף בצלם של האדמו"רים רבי יחזקאל שרגא הלברשטאם אב"ד שינאווא, רבי יששכר דב רוקח אב"ד בעלז ובנו רבי אהרן רוקח אב"ד בעלז.
עודו צעיר לימים, בשנת תרס"ו, נתמנה לרבה של קהילת ליקוב. בשנת תרע"ב הוכתר כרבה של צעהלים, במקום דודו רבי אליעזר דוד גרינוולד בעל "קרן לדוד". שם הקים ישיבה חשובה ושמו נודע כאחד מחשובי רבני הונגריה. בשנת תרפ"ג נתמנה לרבה של קהילת באנפי-הוניאד, ובשנת תרפ"ט התמנה לרבה של הקהילה החרדית בפאפא. שם כבר מנתה ישיבתו מאות תלמידים, והייתה מהגדולות והחשובות בהונגריה.
על מצבתו נחקקו בין היתר המילים הבאות: "הוא הגבר אשר נתן נפשו להרביץ תורה, יראת שמים וחסידות, עמד בפרץ להעמיד דת תוה"ק, ברשפי אש תפילותיו עורר לבבות, וקירב ישראל לאביהם שבשמים".
לאחר פטירתו מילא את מקומו בנו, הגאון הקדוש רבי יוסף גרינוולד, שלאחר השואה הגיע לארה"ב, ושם כונן מחדש את קהילתו "קהילת יעקב - פאפא", והיה אחד מגדולי הרבנים והאדמו"רים בארה"ב.
נדיר ביותר! רוב ככל עותקי הספר נשמדו בשואה הנוראה.
בהקדמה למהדורה השנייה כותב בן המחבר: "לפני המהפכה שבמדינה הוצאתי לאור את הספר... ובעוה"ר סמוך אחרי צאתו מבית הדפוס נעשה המהפכה במדינה על ידי הרשעים, ולא הפיצותי מהספרים רק מעט מזעיר והשאר אבדו".
מהדורה ראשונה זו אינה נמצאת בספריות בארץ, ואינה רשומה במפעל הביבליוגרפיה!
לפנינו עותק נדיר של הספר, שמור במצב מצוין, עם הכריכה המקורית ועליה מוטבע בזהב שם הספר.
בשנת תש"ז נדפס באנטוורפן הספר במהדורת צילום מחודשת עם שינויים. במהדורת הצילום נשמטו מספר קטעים שכתב בן המחבר על משפחתו של המחבר ועל צאצאיו, ובמקומם נדפס קטע קצר לזכרם של בני המשפחה שנספו בשואה.
Va'Yaged Ya'akov, by Rabbi Ya'akov Chizkiya Greenwald - Satmar, 1944 - First Edition which Most of Its Copies were Destroyed in the Holocaust
Divrei Aggadah and Halacha and Divrei Torah on the Sabbath and the holy days, by Rabbi Ya'akov Chizkiya Greenwald. Edited by his son, Rabbi Yosef Greenwald. The book also contains Chidushei Mishnayot of the Yoma and Sukkah tractates from a manuscript by the author of "Arugot Ha'Bosem", Rabbi Moshe Greenwald, the author's father. It also contains the booklet "Tzedah La'Derech" - the last will and testament of the author, with Likutei Mussar which were found in his writings. The chapters of the book are full of sayings of the Ba'al Shem Tov and other leading Hassidic rabbis.
At the beginning of the book, a long introduction (16 pp.) by the author's son describing his father's history and praising him. Then there is a "a copy of a letter written by our rabbi to the battlefield in 1915" with words of comfort and support and "a copy of a letter written by our rabbi in 1941 to his son-in-law and disciples who were in army camps in those terrible days".
Rabbi Ya'akov Chizkiya Greenwald (1882-1941) Av Beit Din of Puppa, the son and disciple of Rabbi Moshe Greenwald, author of "Arugot Ha'Bosem" and Av Beit Din of Hust. In 1900, he married the daughter of his uncle Rabbi Yisreal Menachem Bruijn, who was Av Beit Din of Razowitz.
He was close to the Rebbes, Rabbi Yechezkel Sheraga Halberstam, Rabbi Yissachar Dov Roke'ach of Belz and his son Rabbi Aharon Rekeach of Belz.
In 1906, he became the rabbi of Tzehlim, where he founded an important yeshiva. In 1929, he became the rabbi of the Haredi community of Puppa. Hundreds of students studied at his yeshiva there and it became one of the most important yeshivas in Hungary.
After his death, his son, Rabbi Yosef Greenwald, replaced him. After the Holocaust, he migrated to the USA, where he reestablished his community, the "Ya'akov Puppa" community and became one of the leading rabbis and rebbes in the USA.
Extremely rare! Almost all the copies of the book were destroyed in the Holocaust.
In the introduction to the second edition, the author's son wrote: "before the revolution I published the book … yet close to its publishing there was a revolution by evil persons and I did not distribute the books, but for a few, and the rest have been lost".
This first edition does not appear in libraries in Israel and is not listed by the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book.
Before us is a rare copy of the book, excellently preserved with the original binding with a golden impression of its title.
In 1947, a facsimile edition of the book was published in Antwerp with changes. In this edition, several passages that the author's son had written about the author's family and descendants were replaced by a short passage inmemory of the family members who died in the Holocaust.
