DESCRIPTION

New edition copies of Bowell's Life of Johnson, dated 1951 from Jisc and a copy of Journal of a Tour of the Hebrides, also a new edition dated 1952.

Bowell's Life of Johnson is complete in four volumes and the Journal of a Tour of the Hebrides is complete in one volume. 

The Life of Samuel Johnson is an extensive account of his studies and works by James Boswell who was a Scottish biographer, diarist and lawyer. 

Volume one has many in-text illustrations and details the early life of Johnson, with adverts to the rear. Volume two starts in 1766 and ends in 1776. Volume three begins in 1776 and ends 1780, with a folding plate. Volume four begins in 1780 and ends in 1784 with adverts to the rear

Journal of a Tour of the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson is also by James Boswell and s the first portion of Bowell's Life of Dr. Johnson. With adverts to the rear. 

Each volume has an engraved title page and frontispiece and in-text illustrations.
Collated, complete.


CONDITION

All are in the original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart with fading to the spines and marks to the boards, a large mark to the front board of Hebrides. Bumping to the head and tail of the spines. With previous own pencil inscriptions to the reverse of the rear free endpaper of vol i and iii, front hinge is also starting but remains firm. Previous owner pencil inscriptions the two pages after the front free endpaper of vol ii and vol iiii. Front hinge starting to vol 3 and four and remain generally firm. Internally, generally firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages.
