Is kintsugi too difficult for beginners?

Kintsugi does involve the careful handling of urushi (lacquer), which can be challenging, but our kit provides detailed instructions. As long as you follow the steps and don't skip or deviate from them, even beginners can create beautiful pieces. We recommend reading the included manual and watching multiple kintsugi-related videos on YouTube before starting.

Can it be used on tableware?

Yes, this kit is suitable for use with tableware. It exclusively uses natural materials and does not contain synthetic resins or adhesives, making it safe for food-related items.

Can it repair pieces with missing fragments?

Yes, you can repair pieces with missing fragments using this kit. If the depth of the missing part is less than 2mm, you can use rust urushi. If it's more than 2mm, you can use kokuso urushi. The kit includes materials for both, and the manual provides detailed instructions.

Can repaired ceramics be used with hot food?

Yes, ceramics repaired with urushi, gold, or silver can withstand temperatures up to 100 degrees Celsius without any issues. However, since it involves metal, it's advisable to avoid using it in a microwave.

What level of repair is possible with the kit?

The extent of repair depends on the extent of the damage, but for most small to medium-sized repairs, the kit should be sufficient. It includes 0.1g of gold powder and 0.3g of silver powder, which can be used to repair several pieces.

What else do I need besides the kit?

Apart from the kit, you'll need salad oil, water, tissues, plastic wrap, and arm covers (if necessary). These are mentioned in the manual.

How long does the process take?

Kintsugi can take approximately a month, depending on the extent of damage. The actual working time each day is not long, typically around 30 minutes to an hour. The most time-consuming part is waiting for the urushi to dry, which can take from one day to one week per urushi application. The manual provides detailed explanations.

Can it be used on wooden items?

Yes, you can use this kit to repair wooden items using a similar process to ceramics. However, wooden items are softer and can absorb moisture or warp under external pressure. To accommodate this, you may want to "widen the cracks slightly" to allow for the absorption of urushi. This means applying a wider coat of kokuso urushi as filler. If you don't require excessive strength, you can use the standard ceramic repair process.
