Up for bid is a finely detailed Meiji period Japanese bronze
figurine on stand of a boy balancing a ball.
The piece is 7 1/2 inches tall by 4 inches wide by 3 ¼ inches deep. The figure itself is 6 inches tall, and has a
nice even brown patina. It shows a boy
or young man wearing a traditional loin-cloth, balanced on one foot, with a
hollow wicker ball balanced on the other foot.
It has very nice detail. The
figure has a threaded rod under the foot that passes through a flat square of
bronze (not attached) on a carved wood square stand, secured with a nut. The exterior of the stand has black paint and
an alligatored varnish surface. There
are no visible marks.
Condition on the piece is quite good. It has a deep patina, and there is some wear where
the foot meets the plaque at the base. A
fine old figure.
