US 1944 V-Mail letter (you can see the silver in it) --- letter is to Mrs. C. C. Low, Cumberland Road, Portland, Oregon --- from Lieutnenant Preston Low, 3545 Quartermaster Truck Company, A.P.O. 600, c/o Postmaster, New York, N.Y. --- A.P.O. 600 indicates that at this time this writer is located in Oran, Algeria, the Mediterranean Base Section --- letter is self-censored;

Letter is dated Monday, June 26, 1944 and begins, "Dear Mom and Dad, I seem to be very busy of late - I almost get the feeling that they are putting me to work.  This is certainly a fine outfit to serve with.  We do things on a very informal basis -- all the officers (there are 4 of us) get along fine together."

"I decided to take advantage of a few minutes each day to teach the fellows in the company who need it -- how to read.  We have a class every day and are making good progress.  There are five of them, they have a lot of enthusiasm and try very hard.  Yesterday, one boy, age 24, wrote the first word he had ever written, 'cab'.  I have to be careful about my penmanship around them.  I have them write with chalk mostly on "Clack? Boards, the wooden sides of a small building that is our school room.  I have them learning the letters individually and have taught them the alphabet already.  Then I teach them sounds and put the letters together.  It is interesting work.  With love, Preston"

(Please note that some spelling and punctuation was corrected in order for the letter to be understood).
