The suggestion of a sweet day-dream is in this picture. The attitude of the maiden who bends over and half buries her face in the exquisite mass of bloom, and the embroidered vine upon her quaint robe, following the line of the rose-stems, support the poetic illusion that she and the flowers have something in common. Why holds she the roses with so close a pressure and so absent a gaze, drawing their honeyed perfume into her very soul? Perhaps only half-consciously there is that in the maiden's heart of which roses are the emblem. Among the ancients this flower was sacred to the deities of love:

When Love first came to earth, the spring

Spread rose-buds to receive him.

The rose was likewise a symbol of silence, whence the expression, "Under the rose." They are silent who have a secret to guard. This solitary maiden, it may be, whispers to the flowers that which she would confide to no mortal ear, or scarce acknowledge to herself.

O rose, the sweetest blossom,

Of spring the fairest flower,

O rose, the joy of heaven!
