A most unique piece, this ceramic Meiji Period (1869-1912) vase is shaped like a sack or bag tied with a gilded cord. The body of the vase has five Immortals beautifully painted in polychrome enamels and gilt against a background of mountains with coniferous trees. They are wearing colorful kimono and are involved in everyday activity: one is serving another a steaming bowl of food, two are studying/discussing written pages, and the fifth is being contemplative/amused. The facial details are wonderful, executed with the skill of the old masters.

The top of the vase has been gathered and is folded at the neck and top. There is a thick cord in high relief which is tied in a bow around the neck and has tassels hanging down.

Standing 8 1/4" ( 21cm) high and 4" (10cm) in diameter. It is signed with red characters on the side near the bottom. Condition is excellent- just a little wear of the gold mostly around the lip.
