1964 Seattle Rainiers "Popcorn" Card
[#3] - RUSS GIBSON ~ 1964 Seattle Rainiers (PCL)
According to Beckett BASEBALL CARD ALPHABETICAL CHECKLIST book, this card is the subject's FIRST CARD
Original Seattle area regional
For 19 years (1954-1968) the Seattle Rainiers (later Angels) issued little 2" by 3" picture cards, inserting them in boxes of popcorn at Sick's Stadium. In a few of those years (1956-1958 and 1965-1967) the cards carried advertising on the reverse side whereas they were normally blank-backed. This card carries a Gil's Drive-in advertisement and mentions "two locations to serve you". Gil's also had an ad on the 1957 cards but a third location by that time was added. In '58, an advertisement for Ralph's Thriftway Market supplanted Gil's.
All early Seattle popcorn cards are scarce; this Gil's Drive-in card is no exception. Although in low grade, it still presents well with good gloss.
Condition: Very Good or better - check the high-resolution scans. A blue background is provided to facilitate evaluation of the corners and edges of this card.
A bit about the subject: Russ Gibson played 6 seasons in the majors - three each for the Boston Red Sox (1967-69) and San Francisco Giants (1970-72).
