These are NOT generic photos - you're looking at the actual rocks you will receive when ordering! And all orders are mailed out within one business day at no extra cost.! Also known as "scoria" or "cinder", they were hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona.

Our new spokes-model, Woody, wants you to know these rocks are black / dark gray, ranging from roughly 4" to 6" on their longest axis. Two of them are obvious lava bomb segments, with dense, solid portions that were originally at the center of a larger, molten rock. You'll see lots of pores and pockmarks on these rocks, along with a few cracks, crevices, and shallow holes; one or two of them would make exceptional lava walls or mountains in a smaller tank setting.

Those pockmarks are scoria's most recognizable feature. When they were expelled from volcanoes that were active here over a half million years ago, hot gases were captured within the molten lava and trapped as it cooled, leaving thousands of tiny "pores" within the rock itself.

They would be ideal for the following uses:

• In aquariums. Set them out a bit from a corner to create a safe space for smaller fish, or combine them with other rocks to create an underground scene. Scoria lava rocks are extremely lightweight and reduce the risk of damaging your tanks. They offer additional benefits ensuring the health of your aquarium, too. IMPORTANT: These rocks are shipped in a natural state and need to be prepared before introducing them into your aquarium.

• Lava rocks can create a beautiful setting in your terrarium or bonsai tree arrangements. Juxtapose these rocks to larger plants to create a visual offset, for example. (Please see our other listings if you’re looking for something in a different size or shape. Each listing is unique.)

• Lava rocks are an ideal base for planting small succulents. Their pores offer natural benefits that help certain varieties of succulents to even thrive compared to other planting methods. They allow air to pass to their shallow roots, while retaining moisture as water easily drains. Their native roughness offers a place for plants to grab hold and take root, too.

We know how to rock here at Arizona Lava Rocks! Ours don't start out in a pile in some yard! Each rock is individually gathered. It was picked off the ground because something about it caught our eye. Again, this listing is for the specific rocks you see in the accompanying photos. Our inventory is constantly changing - please check out our other listings.
