Description: 1898 Admiral George Dewey Winged Victory Manila Bay Bronze Medal 32mm

1898 bronze medal issued by C.P. Aliesky & Co. in commemoration of Admiral George Dewey's historic victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

Obverse features right-facing bust of Dewey in his regalia, likely referencing the famous portrait of him published in The World's Great Classics, surrounded by the text, "Admiral U.S.N. Geo. Dewey." Reverse reads, "Victory Manila, May 1, 1898," encircling Winged Victory with two puttis holding the staff of Hermes and a torch. This version depicts a star above Nike extremely close the figures' head which distinguishes it from more common medals with similar subject matter.

George Dewey (1837-1917) was an Admiral of the U.S. Navy and remains the only individual to have achieved the rank. He is third to only George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in the amount of numismatics created in his honor. Dewey became a national icon after he led an attack on Manila Bay, sinking the entire Spanish Pacific fleet while suffering only minor casualties. Dewey's victory at Manila Bay was widely lauded in the United States, and he was subsequently promoted to Admiral of the Navy and celebrated through the production of various medals, tokens, and ephemera.
