DESCRIPTION

This is the twelfth edition of the work, in original publisher's red cloth binding and original unclipped dust wrapper. This work was first published in May 1926.

This work was written by Herman Cyril McNeile, a British soldier and author who often drew on his personal experiences in the trenches during the First World War. During the war, McNeile had many short stories published in the Daily Mail, and then continued writing fiction post-war, often under the pseudonym Sapper. He is most well-known for his detective series of Bulldog Drummond.

This particular work features 'Shorty Bill', a character who appears in McNeiles previous works 'No Mans Land' and 'The Human Touch'. This work appears eight years after the other two novels, as McNeile explains that war novels stopped being so popular. Despite this, the author believed it was important that the stories are told to the younger generation and that people are reminded. McNeile explains in his preface that 'Shorty Bill' is a combination of three men he encountered during the war, two of which died and one of which was alive at the time of publishing.

With an inscription of A E Colbourn dated Jan 14th 1936 to the front endpaper, and another of the same inscription to the half title. A final inscription stating King George V died Monday Jan 20th 1936 at 11:55pm.
