REDD FOXX - HAT UNSIGNED - HFSID 269868

REDD FOXX'S TRADEMARK BERET CAP

REDD FOXX. Black beret cap owned and worn by Redd Foxx. "Kangol" and a kangaroo stamped on the back. Jacques Henry Sergene began his hat company in 1930, when he started to brand his berets "Kangol". It is said that he took the "K" from Knitting or Knitted, the "ANG" from angora and the "OL" from wool. Fine condition. Accompanied by a December 1, 1993 letter of authenticity stating the cap was "bought at Red Foxx's estate sale from Mrs. Foxx and was worn by Redd Foxx himself." Newspaper advertisements relating to the sale at Foxx's hom on So. Eastern Avenue in Las Vegas, are reproduced at lower margin. Lightly creased with fold. Soiled and stained. Redd Foxx (1922-1991) began doing stand up comedy on the infamous "chitlin" citcuit in the 1940s and 1950s. He was one of the premier "blue humor" comedians. Blue humor was very dirty, too dirty for white audiences. For years, Foxx's party albums were not available in white record stores. In the 1960s, his records became available, although marginally in white record stores, leading to minor comedy work on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Red Skelton Show, among other classic variety shows of the time. Foxx starred on his own television show from 1972-1977, Sanford and Son, playing Fred Sanford, owner of a junkyard with his son in Watts, a bad neighborhood in Los Angeles. The show broke down racial stereotypes and was a huge success, making Foxx and the show household names. Foxx was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor (1973-1976), winning in 1973, and was nominated for three Emmy Awards (1972-1974). He later starred in three short-lived series, The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour (1977-1978), Sanford (1980, 1981) and The Redd Foxx Show (1986), and in motion pictures including Norman…Is That You? (1976) and Harlem Nights (1989).  Foxx returned to sitcom television as Atlanta letter carrier Al Royal on The Royal Family. It premiered on CBS on September 18, 1991. On October 11, 1991, after seven episodes had been filmed, Redd Foxx collapsed on the set and died of a heart attack. Two items.
