Description

Carte de visite of young lady from Auburn, New York in her native costume. This image is of Civil War period and photographed by Locke’s Gallery who also took many soldier images during the war.  She wears a tartan that resembles the Scottish style of family origins. The pillbox tartan hat she is wearing is unusual and beautiful. If you look to the lower left I believe I see a set of shoes…or perhaps one shoe next to a table? Likely her everyday shoes sit aside for this portrait or her brothers shoes that had his portrait previously taken? Her right foot also appears to have something attached to it like dirt... or is simply damaged. This is the type of portrait that you just want to dive into and ask her directly on all of the above.
