This is the 1722 First Printing of THE HISTORY OF THE LIFE & REIGN OF QUEEN ANNE. ILLUSTRATED with All the Medals Struck in this Reign, with their Explanations; and other Useful and Ornamental Cuts. To which is added, An Appendix, Containing several Authentick and Remarkable Papers; And an Annual List of the most eminent Persons who dy'd in this Reign, with Characters of the most Conspicuous, by Abel Boyer (ca. 1667-1729), Printed by J. Roberts; and sold by William Taylor. This is a Large, Thick Folio Volume measuring 9.5" x 15" and containing [ii], xii, 722, 65, [15] pp. with 2 engraved portraits by Van der Gucht including the frontispiece, 3 engraved plates of medals, 2 folding engraved plans (of Lille and of the battle of Blenheim), and wood and copper-engraved illustrated head and tailpieces and initial letters, and another medal (?) depicting Anne and Great Britain at the bottom of p. 511. Errata is listed at the bottom of the last page of text (Index). The book is rebacked in period leather boards with the original heavy gilt-decorated spine having 6 raised bands and a brown morocco leather title label laid down and with all edges stained red. Mounted on the front pastedown are 2 engraved armorial bookplates; one of Francis J. Tennant and the other lacking a name, having only a motto in Latin. Mounted in the lower right corner is the small bookseller's stamp of Henry Southern Ltd., and laid in is the printed description and a 1995 receipt in the amount of 280 Pounds from the bookseller.


Abel Boyer was a French-English lexicographer, journalist and writer. Born in France, Boyer studied in Puylaurens and Franeker, Friesland, before moving to England in 1689. A prolific author, his publications include 'The compleat French master for ladies and gentlemen' (1694), 'Character of the Virtues and Views of the Age' (1695), 'Royal Dictionary' (1699), and 'The Wise and Ingenious Companion, French and English' (1700). He also wrote biographies of King William III, Queen Anne and Sir William Temple. In December 1699, Boyer produced for the London stage, a translation of Jean Racine's 'IphigĂ©nie'.
