MARIAGE, AIME. Numération par huit anciennement en usage par toute la terre prouvée par les Koua des Chinois, par la Bible, par les livres d'Hésiode, d'Homère, d'Hérodote, etc... Paris: Imprimerie le Normant, 1857.

An interesting and very rare book that studies the use of the number "8" in religion and literature throughout world history. Beginning with the Pakua of ancient China, the author also studies the use of the number eight in the Bible, ancient Greek literature, etc. Perhaps the most interesting part of the book, however, is the large folding plate that accompanies it - a board game that the author claims dates back to ancient times. There are numerous calculations and analysis of data in the text. Curious and rare - the only copy that I could locate in the United State is at Yale. 8vo (22 x 14cm), 243pp. Very large folding plate (58 x 49cm). Title-page and half-title detached but present. Rebound in later marbled boards preserving original front wrapper.
