SEE PHOTO(s) - COMPLETE ORIGINAL illustrated Civil War NEWSPAPER, Harper's Weekly (NY, NY) dated Aug 5, 1865. This original illustrated newspaper contains a double page, 22" x 17" poster-like engraving titled: "PARDON / FRANCHISE" and drawn by famous Civil War era political cartoonist THOMAS NAST.
This double page August 5, 1865 poster-like engraving published in Harper's Weekly newspaper by Thomas Nast contrasted Confederate politicians and generals begging and pleading for pardons (among them Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens, Congressman Robert Toombs, Admiral Raphael Semmes, Generals Robert E. Lee, Richard Ewell and John Bell Hood) with an African-American Union veteran who lost a leg in service to his country, but does not have the right to vote. Columbia, representing the United States, asks herself, "Shall I trust these men and not this man?"
These wood engravings, from illustrations by Thomas Nast, were published in the August 5, 1865, edition of Harper's Weekly. At left, the symbol of American liberty, Columbia, contemplates the wisdom of granting former Confederate generals and politicians a pardon. At right, an African American man who lost a limb fighting for the Union is not permitted to vote. "Shall I trust these men," Columbia asks of the former Confederates and "not this man?" who suffered for the Union. The stripes of the tattered American flag behind the black soldier bear the words "Fort Pillow," a battle that resulted in a massacre of African American soldiers by Confederates, and "Fort Wagner," a battle in which African American soldiers led an assault and suffered heavy casualties.
The newspaper usually contained 8 pages of text and 8 pages of gorgeous woodcut engravings, highly prized today for their detailed contemporary illustrations of events and places. The engravings are generally in 3 sizes: double page (DP - 21" X 16"), Full page (FP- 16" x 11") , and half page (HP- 10" x 8").
