\This is the 1721 First Complete Edition of THE WORKS OF THE RIGHT HONORABLE JOSEPH ADDISON, Esq. Printed in London in 4 Volumes for Jacob Tonson at Shakespear's-Head. This edition was Edited by Thomas Tickell, who served under Addison when he was appointed Secretary of State in 1717. Before Addison's death he gave Tickell instructions to collect his works.

 Volume I has a Frontispiece Portrait of Addison after a 1716 painting by Godfrey Kneller and engraved in 1721 by George Vertue, followed by xxiv, [1]-559 pp., page "i" having a large classical masthead with cherubs after Jac. Thornhill and engraved by Gerard Van der Gucht. This volume contains the Preface, Poems on several occasions, Rosamond, An Essay on Virgil's Georgics, Cato, Poemata, and Dialogues Upon the Usefullness of Ancient Medals, with 6 leaves of plates.

Volume II contains [viii], 583 pp., with a secondary title page, also dated 1721 following the general title which reads, "Remarks on Several Parts of Italy, &c.", with several textual illustrations of Medals. Also contains his writings in the TATLER and in the SPECTATOR (Nos. 1-89). 

Volume III contains 624 pp. comprising the author's writings published in the SPECTATOR (Nos. 90-505).

Volume IV contains 594 pp.. followed by an impressive 17-page List of Subscribers at the rear. This volume includes further writings in the SPECTATOR, and also the GUARDIAN, the WIG-EXAMINER, the FREE-HOLDER, and more. The Spectator, no. 507-600. The Guardian. The lover. The present state of the war, and the necessity of an augmentation, considered. The late tryal and conviction of Count Tariff. The Whig-examiner. The Free-holder. Of the Christian religion

All four volumes are further embellished with numerous engraved ornamental mastheads, headpieces, tailpieces and initial letters. They are uniformly bound in full period blind-paneled and decorated, sprinkled polished calf leather with heavy gilt-decorated spines compartmented by 5 raised bands, each having a brown morocco leather spine label titled in gilt, and all 4 volumes having a pair of blank leaves at the front and rear of each volume, except for Vol. III, which has only one each at front and rear. An attractive set!
