Japanese Geisha Juggler #1155
A very nice Dahl Jensen figurine #1155 of a Japanese Geisha playing a shamisen (which translates as “three strings”), a traditional Japanese instrument with three strings, a narrow neck and a hollow body covered front and back with animal skins, similar to a banjo. She is dressed in an elaborate floral kimono and plays the shamisen using a large pick called a bachi.
This figurine was designed by Dahl Jensen himself (other sculptors also worked for Dahl Jensen). Because of all the detailed hand-painting, it would have been quite expensive when new and sold in very limited quantities. Book Value in 2003 (Popes) was $500 - $800.
The Dahl Jensen factory stopped producing figurines in 1981. Dahl Jensen figurines are known for having more detail and more color than most figurines produced by either Royal Copenhagen or Bing and Grondahl, and Dahl Jensen Oriental figurines (such as this one) exemplify those characteristics of detail and color.
Approximately 9 inches (a little over 23 cm) tall and about 7 inches (18 cm) wide. Full Dahl Jensen backstamp, including the crowned initials DJ trademark and the words COPENHAGEN and DENMARK.
PLEASE NOTE! The shamisen has three strings and THREE TUNING PEGS at the top of the neck. If you don't see all 3 tuning pegs on someone else's listing, it is because they have BROKEN OFF -- easy to miss in a photo. Mine is all original and intact.
EXCELLENT CONDITION (no chips, cracks, repairs or other significant defects). Marked as second quality (scratch through trademark, almost impossible to see in a photo) for no obvious reason. A handsome figurine. If someone else’s listing doesn’t SAY it is first quality, you can reasonably assume that it is either second quality OR the seller doesn’t know the difference and you won't know what you're buying.
