NEWFOUNDLAND 56 1/2c ROSE RED DOG 1887 BABNC MONTREAL PRINTING MPH CV$45

Half cent, rose red, Newfoundland Dog stamp from the British American Bank Note Co. (Montreal) issue of 1887, engraved, no watermark, line perf. 12.0x12.0. Recess printed on medium weight, crisp, off white wove paper with horizontal mesh, dull slightly yellow tinted gum.  Approximately 60% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging, hinge remnants. Sound, fault-free stamp.

Based on a painting by Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) and designed by Joseph T. Rolph, this was the first stamp in the world to feature a dog. Listed in the 2023 edition of the Walsh Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue as NSSC 39 with a price guideline of $45.00 US for a very fine, previously hinged mint stamp. NSSC suggests a premium of 6X for a stamp with mint, never-hinged original gum.
