NEWFOUNDLAND 58 NSSC 40 1894 1/2c WORLD'S FIRST DOG STAMP BABNC (#312) MPH CV$25

Half cent, black, Newfoundland Dog stamp from the British American Bank Note Co. (Montreal) issue of 1894, engraved, no watermark, line perf. 12.0x12.0. Recess printed on medium weight, crisp, off white wove paper with horizontal mesh, dull slightly yellowish gum. Approximately 20% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging, hinge remnant. Sound, fault-free example of this Newfoundland stamp.

Based on a painting by Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) and designed by Joseph T. Rolph, the rose red issue of 1887 of this stamp was the first stamp in the world to feature a dog. Listed in the 2023 edition of the Walsh Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue as NSSC 40 with a catalogue value of $25.00 US for a previously hinged mint stamp and $150.00 US for a stamp with mint, never-hinged original gum.
