This exceptionally large and impressive piece is beautifully decorated with a masterfully executed hand brushed oxide glaze design featuring an array of animals rendered in a delightfully naive style.
A boldly brushed emu adorns one side of the vessel while a horse features to the opposing side. A snake coils around the top surface of the lid while a lizard flows around the sides creating a harmoniously balanced and unified design.
The free flowing lines add an exuberant sense of dynamic energy to the masterfully executed artwork.
The exquisite brushed artwork appears atop a rich celadon glaze with oxide bands stylishly trimming the edge of the plate and beautifully framing the design.
Applied handles to opposing sides of the vessel perfectly balance the form.
This piece is an absolute delight to hold and touch. Being a hand crafted example it is as if you can feel the artists hands that formed the piece into shape.

SIZE: This impressive piece stands approx 305mms tall with the lid in place. The body measures 130mms in diameter and measures 215mms in width from handle to handle.
WEIGHT: This substantial piece weighs 2.220 kgs, the sheer size and weight alone are testament to the masterfully skills of the potter.
CONDITION: This exquisite lidded pot is presented in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. This piece has been very well cared for and presents beautifully.
MARKS: This piece is beautifully signed to the base with the artists' inscribed initials "L. S".
THE ARTIST: Leon Saper (1928 - 2005), was born in Poland to Jewish parents, and after surviving the holocaust, immigrated to Melbourne from France. In 1955, Saper became a member of the vibrant Dunmoochin artist colony founded by renowned Australian artist Clifton Pugh at Cottles Bridge near Eltham, Victoria. Inspired by the community of potters who lived and worked at Dunmoochin, Saper began to experiment with pottery, after years spent trying to forge a career as a musician and painter. Saper sold his pottery at the St Andrews market, becoming an iconic feature referred to as "The Dunmoochin Potter".
