DESCRIPTION

ESTC Citation No. S997

First published in 1611, this is the work of leading English cartographer and historian John Speed, considered one of the best known English mapmakers of the early modern period.

Following encouragement from English antiquarian and historian William Camden, Speed began this work, utilising the work of cartographers Christopher Saxton and John Norden.

The work offers a highly detailed summary of Early English history, and whilst it has been criticised for a number of inaccuracies, the subsequent frequent citations of the work in later historical pieces reflect its historical significance. Among others, the work offers detailed information regarding the early successors and founders of English institutions including The Saxons, Henry VIII and Edward IV.

Engraved portrait frontispiece supplied in facsimile. Vignette illustrations throughout.

With the register: ¶6, A8, B-2H6, 2I4, 2K-4S6, 4T4, 4V-4Z6, 5A8, 5B-5Q6, 5O6, 5S-5Y6, 5Z4. Leaves E2 and E3 misbound. Aside from the frontispiece - which is supplied in facsimile - the work is collated, complete.

With the armorial bookplate of William Bennet Martin to the front pastedown, and the inscription of 'Edmund' and 'Catherine' to the head of the rectos of the following two blanks.

The very scarce third edition of Speed's important work.
