DESCRIPTION

The second edition of Onian's scarce work, in the publisher's original dust wrapper, price clipped.

First published in 1951, Onians's work is based on his 1926 doctoral thesis, and examines the roots of European civilisation, and the beliefs about life, the mind, body and soul, and human destiny that are embodied in the works of Homer and his contemporaries. He explores cultures as diverse as the Greeks and the Norse, the Celts and the Jews, and the Chinese and the Romans.

This second edition features corrections, and an expanded appendix.

The author's obituary in The Times in 1986 announced that 'although the book, which covers a vast field, does not always carry conviction, it was one of the most important of its day in the field of classical studies and remains a valuable tool'.
