DESCRIPTION

An uncommon first edition of the work, in original publisher's green cloth binding, with original unclipped dust wrapper.

John Wyndham was an English writer of science fiction whose novels were often set using classical English surroundings or characters, to imply that the plots were plausible and could happen in our society. This particular work was published posthumously by his estate, 10 years after his death.

The novel follows the events on a fictional island named Tanakuatua, which lies seemingly uninhabited in the Pacific Ocean. The story includes a sense of intrigue, as a wealthy benefactor finances a mysterious project to establish a utopian colony on this island. The novel is written from the viewpoint of one of those sent to investigate the island, Arnold Delgrange, who soon realises that they might not be the only inhabitants.
